Why is it that with most films with mermaids in them post 1984's Splash, the scenes are incredibly dark? I think it's because of all the CGI that makes it look so phony, almost cartoon like. In splash, they built a fully functional mermaid tail that looked so realistic, and the scenes were actually shot underwater. Now, they superimpose the tails on the actress and put her underwater with only computerized visual effects.
